In this week's Pastor's Update, Rev. Myra invites us all to stay after Sunday, October 15th, 9:30 am Mass for her brief 20-minute presentation on why Spiritus is asking for an All Parish Vote (date TBD) to determine whether Spiritus should move from a leasing model to an ownership model. Rev. Myra also plans to recap the information shared at previous Parish Community Forums, so that we can all feel as informed and knowledgeable as we prepare to cast our vote.
Rev. Myra then reads from Rev. Celie's bulletin letter, in which she highlights the fact that October is Mental Health Center month. Celie pays tribute to the MHC's community-outreach work, led by Eileen Hurley, which ministers to people affected by gun violence, and works to address poverty, racism, and the social injustices that contribute to many mental health struggles. She also reminds us that the MHC's Annual Riverwalk is coming up on Sunday October 22, with a beautiful stroll along the river followed by food, fun for all ages, and fellowship.
Another exciting upcoming event is Spiritus' REPARATIONS TOWN HALL on Tuesday, October 17th from 5:30-7:30 pm in the Chapel. Come join NYS Senator Jeremy Cooney, NYS Assemblymember Demond Meeks and visiting NYS Senator James Sanders to learn how we can encourage Gov. Hochul to sign this bill that would establish a commission to study the historical and lasting impacts slavery has had on Black New Yorkers, and potential reparations for the legacy of slavery.
Finally, Rev. Celie details the joy of hearing all the delighted voices in the church hallways this season -- volunteers, asylum seekers, folks qualifiying for the GBI Initiative -- all proof of what Jesus told us long ago: we do not have to look far for the kingdom of God, that great hodgepodge of diverse people living together in harmony!
May the bright leaves around us remind you of the fire of the Spirit, and inspire you to do brave things this week!
