A protest in Istanbul's Gezi Park against the reconstruction of an Ottoman-style barracks and shopping mall over one of Istanbul's few remaining green areas has led to protests erupting all over the country against the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. This has shocked many international observers who had always seen Turkey as a stable, democratic and reliable NATO ally.
