In this episode of "2 minutes of", we dive into EU ETS, a de facto carbon tax for shipowners. When applicable to your ship and voyage, you have to pay ("surrender") one allowance for every metric ton of CO2 equivalent emitted. With the current outlook and allowance price of €65, a tanker consuming 10,000 metric tons of fuel oil would pay roughly €2M per year from 2026 onwards. Prices of allowances are expected by most organizations to rise to €400 or more by 2050.
