The Micra is available in three separate trim levels, namely Visia, Acenta and Acenta+, but first, let’s start with some Micra history. From the original Micra first-generation K10 model with its square design elements (1982 -1992) to the second-generation K11 (1992 -2002) model with more rounded lines, and then the third-generation K12 (2002 - 2007) with its much more youthful, cute and charming rounded looks, the Micra has certainly evolved in its overall body styling. Following the K12, came the marginally changed K13 (2010 -2017) model and now fast-forward to 2018 and we get the new, sharper than ever and incredibly striking model dubbed K14 (2018 onwards).
From any angle, it's clear to the Micra's evolutionary design. The new car features much sharper, more angular and striking lines. The front fascia features the Nissan family trademark deep V-Motion grille design which floats in the vehicles high-gloss black and chrome trim elements and beautifully compliments its boomerang inspired LED daytime running lamps.
Thanks to a blacked-out C-pillar, the Micra features a very sporty and almost coupé like floating roof design. This further exudes its sporty nature, as does the inclusion of "hidden" rear door handles. The top-spec Acenta Plus model features two-tone, 17-inch alloy wheels, while even the base-spec Visia model comes with very sharp-looking 15-inch steel wheels and the mid-spec Acenta trim rides on impressive 16-inch alloys.
The new Micra has some stiff competition in the technology space, especially with the likes of the recently launched Volkswagen Polo and Ford Fiesta within South Africa. Thankfully, Nissan has come along fighting hard, and the new Micra now features a wealth of both safety and technological advancements which certainly put it at the forefront of the segment.
To start things off, the interior cabin space benefits from stylish new looks and impressive, tactile and soft-touch premium grade material surfaces. The top-spec Micra Acenta-Plus model even features a vibrant Energy Orange upholstery, which beautifully compliments the Orange available paintwork colour and is even reminiscent of the might GT-R style colouring.
Also available is Nissan's 7-inch full touchscreen floating multimedia system which is featured in the Acenta-Plus model and features every imaginable media source and even the likes of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on demand. Following Nissan's recent interior styling design language, the new Micra also features a very sporty and supportive D-shaped multifunctional steering wheel.
The overall cabin feels very spacious and has a well placed minimalistic and ergonomic layout. Luggage load capacity is also claimed at a very decent 300-litres of capacity with all the seats folded up.
A wealth of new safety features have been added, these include 6 airbags, an anti-lock braking system (ABS) and electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) all as part of Nissan's Intelligent Mobility (NIM).
Owing to the Nissan-Renault alliance, the new Micra features a familiar 0.9-litre, 3-cylinder turbopetrol motor as seen in some of the Renault models such as the new Clio. The drive is overall solid, with the model being in its element once you are on the go. The motor features peak outputs of 66 kW and 140 Nm of torque. Power is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and combined average fuel consumption is claimed at 5.1 L/100 km.
