Every rivalry has its roots, an origin that only intensifies with time.

In 1959, the Celtics, led by "Houdini of the Hardwood" Bob Cousy, Bill Russell, and the Jones duo (Sam and K.C.), faced the Lakers, then based in Minneapolis, led by "The Rabbit" Elgin Baylor. The Celtics swept the Lakers to claim the championship, marking the first of many Finals clashes between the two teams. Two seasons later, the Lakers relocated to the West Coast, settling in Los Angeles while keeping their name.

Throughout the 1960s, the Celtics continued to assert their dominance. In 1965, they faced a tough battle against the Sixers in the Eastern Conference Finals, where John Havlicek's famous steal sealed their spot in the Finals. There, the Celtics once again met the Lakers, now led by the iconic Jerry West, "The Logo," alongside Baylor. Despite the Lakers' star power, the Celtics' defensive prowess prevailed, winning the championship in Game 5. In total, the two teams met six times in the Finals during the decade, with the Celtics emerging victorious each time, guided by the strategic brilliance of legendary coach Red Auerbach. This era of Celtics dominance became the foundation for one of the greatest dynasties in NBA history.
