I have a high-level (C5/C6 incomplete) spinal cord injury and the options on the market for independent driving are not great. In fact, none of them worked for me and don't work for people with my range of abilities. It took me 8 years of research to eventually find a solution I believed in. I worked with an amazing rehabilitation center ([ Ссылка ]) to create one of the first Tesla X wheelchair modifications in the world. They did the magic. I want anyone with a spinal cord injury or other serious physical impairment to know -- a Tesla can be your solution!
What makes the Tesla X a great platform for accessibility modifications?
1) X wing doors create clearance for wheelchair lift and space for storage
2) Charge-at-home or superchargers easier than navigating gas refills at a station
3) Summon feature (FSD) so you can't get parked-in
4) FSD autopilot for extra driving assist (smart cruise control/auto park assist etc.)
5) Variable steering resists (so easy turning option) and custom suspension height (lower for horizontal transfers)
6) Almost everything can be controlled from the steering column and nav touchpad. Perfect for people with limited hand mobility and/or arm range
Modifications (all completely custom integrated by DRCE):
Asento XL power lift seats for driver and passenger side
Asento speedy-lift
Removed two of the three central row seats
Feather-light hand-controls with direct-to-accelerator tie in
Tri-pin steering solution
Build-on for windshield wiper toggle (soon to be 3D-printed)
I'll do my best to answer questions in the comments.
Don't give up. More than you think is possible.
