Twenty-seven miles off the coast from Virginia Beach, two wind turbines sit out of view from the shoreline. These turbines are part of Dominion Energy’s pilot project for the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project.

A survey evaluated public interest in colocation for several activities: seaweed aquaculture farming, an unharvested seaweed forest, a designated research area to study the effects of offshore wind, and recreational boat access. The survey was led by Shannon Fluharty, a Virginia Sea Grant Aquaculture Graduate Research Fellow, and Jonathan van Senten, an assistant professor in Virginia Tech’s Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics.
