In a punitive action, 14 farmers have been arrested in Haryana's Kaithal for stubble burning. The arrests follow 72 FIRs registered last year. The Haryana government's action comes after the Supreme Court criticised its handling of the issue. Despite incentives to discourage stubble burning, the practice continues, contributing to worsening air quality. The newly elected Chief Minister Nair Singh Sen has pledged to provide machinery to farmers to prevent the need for burning. However, the effectiveness of these measures remains to be seen.
