Our awesome landlord and friend rented this mini excavator so we can dig out all the stumps and roots in the field for row crops. We also dug a swale on the northern end of the lot (a swale is a water harvesting ditch on contour - video on that next). Lots of sweetgum, brambles, pine, beauty berry, yaupon, tallow, etc...lots of things that come back after they are cut. We have to extract as much of these roots as possible. We use the machine to rip everything up then come in by hand to collect everything, take it to the burn pile so we can turn all this material into biochar and it will go back into the soil it came from. It's great having a landlord who just happens to be a permaculture designer! #ecofarmer #permaculture #soilfoodweb #dothework
