Théodore Deck basin in Mamluk style
France, 1860–80 AD
Influence from the Islamic world on Western artists reached its peak in the 19th century. Paintings from this era are very well known, while studio ceramics are a field waiting to be re-discovered. A leading innovator was the French potter Theodore Deck (1823–1891). With this large basin, Deck has transformed the almost monochromatic effect of inlaid brass into a blaze of colour. The shape and the calligraphy are superbly executed and faithful to the original; his brilliance is in the reworking of a metallic medium into the far more vibrant possibilities of ceramic. Some of his finest examples will be on view at our museum’s forthcoming exhibition ‘Inspired by the East’. #islamicartsmuseummalaysia #iamm #muziumkesenianislammalaysia #mkim #museum #muzium #visitmuseum #artifact #islamicartifacts #iammartifact #iammcollection #islam #islamichistory #islamicculture #theodoredeck #mamlukinspired #ceramics #museumwithnofrontiers #mamluk
