This is kind of a rambling response to two conflicting issues:
On the one hand, big businesses are making bank by charging high and providing sub-par services, often by aggressive sales tactics.
On the other hand, authors who want to succeed should be aware that the best providers charge a lot, and deserve to get paid.
You should expect to pay something, but that rate ranges wildly - just make sure you due your research, don't fall for sales tricks, and don't give up too much control just because someone offers you want looks like a reasonable publishing package.

It's a weird situation. All the employees felt bad for knowingly publishing 'bad' books. But ALSO had to fight with authors; they were trying to improve the project with editing and cover design, and sometimes the authors fought back with their own unprofessional ideas. But mainly, they oversold, took on too many projects and didn't give them the time or effort they deserved, had a terrible work environment and paid bonus for closing sales (incentivizing deceit)
