My 100th video on YouTube!! :-) Please enjoy from the 175th birthday of the Great Western Railway!!
Day 1 of the GWR175 event at Didcot Railway Centre began with a double header into Didcot with invited guests 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe and 4965 Rood Ashton Hall. However, as we soon discovered, only one loco made it!! 4965 had suffered a mechanical failure the day before, and so had to pull out at the last minute.
No one had heard about it inside Didcot until the train slowly trundled into platform 5 around 15 minutes early. We were getting the tripod out of the car, when a whistle shrieked across the station. It was too late by this point. 5043 had arrived, and although we have 23 seconds of video of her arrival, it was too shaky to be included into the final edit.
So we missed the arrival of the castle, but still it was a birthday celebration for the Great Western Railway. Inside the Great Western Society, a huge crowd had already gathered to see all 14 locomotives. They were:
5029 Nunney Castle
5051 Earl Bathurst
6998 Burton Agnes Hall
3717 City of Truro
96XX 9466
5322 Mogul
3822
1338
1340
3738
3650
7827 Lydham Manor
Fire Fly
1450 (With auto coach)
GUEST: 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe
I don't want to make this a moan, however, this event was attended by many very miserable people who had to point out every single bad point about the society. Many people were complaining about how this is a health and safety person' field trip. Also, if they are going to come to an event like this, they need to remember this: PEOPLE WILL GET IN THE WAY!! On numerous occasions throughout the day, I was shouted at by older generations as they wanted their shot to be 'perfect.' I'd like to thank my Dad, who helped to stand up against one old bloke (who will know who he is) who called out rudely when I was attempting to get 8 seconds of footage inside 5043. THE TRAIN WASN'T GOING TO MOVE FOR ANOTHER 2 HOURS!!!!
Having said that, it didn't ruin my day. The old generations say that it is the young ones who ruin everything. What a load of rubbish!! It's not hard to be happy!!
These are the highlights of the day, mainly in Didcot, however, the final shot is from Appleford, where 5043 powers home to Solihull.
This will be on Southern Steam 2010. Check the website for more details.
