Energy Dispersive Micro X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) is an elemental analysis technique which is non-destructive and requires little or no sample preparation. The method uses X-ray excitation to provide inorganic elemental analysis from Na up to Bk. The Orbis energy dispersive micro-XRF analyzer is widely used in forensic laboratories to analyze trace evidence. The goals of this analysis are to verify the consistency of trace evidence with what is known about the crime scene or suspects. As the Orbis analysis is non-destructive, trace evidence samples can also be analyzed and screened to determine the most appropriate, potentially destructive analysis to apply next. The Orbis is also capable of authenticating bank notes, documents, ceramics and other valuable historical artifacts by comparing the elemental analysis against what is known about the manufacturing of these artifacts.
