While India witnessed a highest single-day spike of 28,000 new Covid-19 cases in Delhi on the 20th of April, 2021, there is something oddly eerie about India’s Covid-19 death figures. This makes one question the government’s level of transparency when it comes to Covid-19 mortality - is the mortality rate of Covid-19 patients in India really low (1.16%), which is less than the mortality rate witnessed during the first wave of Coronavirus; or is the Government simply lying to us about the data and presenting false figures to the population? If the mortality rate of covid-19 patients in the Second Wave was really lower, then as a country we would not be fighting and scrambling for oxygen and beds within the hospitals. Moreover, if the mortality rate really was that low, then our healthcare system would not be cracking under the Second Wave of Covid-19. Night cremations indicate more burned bodies than the number of listed deaths, which reveals an eerie discrepancy between the official data on mortality and the ground reality of mortality. What really are these night cremations? Are they just a secretive manner of “getting rid” of our country’s horrific reality?
