In the Martial Arts in Southeast Asia course conducted by NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences lecturer Dr Mohamed Effendy from the Department of Southeast Asian Studies, students experience Southeast Asia’s warrior spirit first-hand by immersing themselves in the diversity of cultures embedded in the region.
With guidance from professional trainers, they hone basic techniques in silat and other martial art forms practised in the region, from kung fu and baguazhang to the Japanese sword-fighting art of kendo. By learning the philosophies behind the different styles, the students uncover an essential truth about Southeast Asia while embodying the core values inherent in its martial arts. #NUSLife
