How is it possible that I have never heard of the toilet company called Bemis?! Fellow OTs, you need to know their name!!
At the beginning of the year, I was in Vegas for the 2023 Consumer Electronic Show as part of the AARP AgeTech Collaborative to gather ideas on tech that can help people live independently longer.
I came back to Vegas a few weeks later to attend the International Kitchen and Bath show. (I love to be inspired by all the beautiful spaces that I can tweak to suit a client looking for beautiful accessibility!!)
The one thing I WASN’T expecting to discover was a solution that every occupational therapist in home care has been looking for for years!!
“Does anyone have any ideas on how to get a raised toilet seat to work with a bidet??!!”
Plastic raised toilet seats have been around for decades and clients buy them to get off the toilet.
I generally don’t recommend them because they are fixed to the toilet and are quite yucky as the design makes them difficult to keep clean.
Bidet seat attachments are my preferred hack for managing post op twisting restrictions or managing difficulties with wiping.
The problem is that it’s usually a one-or-the-other choice because if you install a raised toilet seat, you block out access to the attachment points for the bidet and the spray angle doesn’t work.
So what do you do with someone who needs the height but ALSO the bidet??
You check out the fantastic solution @Bemis created!!
They have a raised toilet seat (that is also WIDER than the average seat for generous bottoms!) and by recessing the splash guard part, the seat stays clean!
The arms are removable (w/ an insane weight limit for those pushers!!) and you can lift the whole thing out of the way for easy cleaning!
I was so excited about this discovery that I talked @Dan into registering for a booth for @AOTA 2023 so if you are going, make sure to see for yourself @ booth #1017! I’ll be there too helping him out so definitely come by to say hi!
If you can’t wait until April 20th or won’t be at AOTA INSPIRE 2023, here’s a link to the product on Amazon so you can investigate yourself!
