Inspired and moved by the tragic story of teen suicide as a result of bullying in my hometown, I wrote this song to help express how desperately we all want acceptance by others. I wanted to tell a story about how despite coming from a loving family and having friends, when you're being bullied and/or battling depression, sometimes no amount of positive re-enforcement can help shake off those dark feelings. This song is still a work in progress but I really wanted to share it. I recorded this in my hotel room while attending a music conference.
LYRICS:
She's a sensitive girl
From a happy home
With a mom and dad who love her.
Still she feels alone
Like no one understands
Why she's never felt so doubtful
CHORUS
She says,
These compliments that I'm surrounded by
I find it hard to believe them.
They must be talkin 'bout somebody else
I just don't see what they see.
'Cause I am not a fan of me
She's a beautiful girl
With a smile that shines
But she's convinced she's ugly
All she wants
Is for someone
To stop and say she's pretty.
CHORUS
These compliments that I'm surrounded by
I find it hard to believe them.
They must be talkin 'bout somebody else
I just don't see what they see.
'Cause I am not a fan of me
BRIDGE
All because someone said online
It'd be better if she just died.
Sticks and stones can break your soul
And when she took the pills
She fell asleep beside the note
It read,
These compliments that I'm surrounded by
I find it hard to believe them.
They must be talkin 'bout somebody else
I just don't see what they see.
'Cause I am not a fan of me
