(7 Oct 2019) The president of the Central European University has vowed to "never lower the flag in Budapest".
Michael Ignatieff made the comments on Monday at the university's first news conference since its relocation to Vienna from Budapest.
The CEU, founded in 1991 by Hungarian-born billionaire philanthropist George Soros, is considered an ideological opponent by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
The institution had come under increasing political pressure by the Hungarian government to cease its operation in the country.
According to the university, the move to Vienna has cost 200 million Euros.
It is now located in a former bank building in Vienna's 10th district.
Negotiations with the Austrian government to move the campus to another site in Vienna are underway.
