While Canada and some other countries are moving ahead with reopening plans from the COVID-19 pandemic, others are seeing a surge as the World Health Organization reported 183,000 new cases around the world. Brazil and the U.S. are reporting the largest increase in cases. As Redmond Shannon reports, the news comes as some countries show worrying signs of a second wave.
In the U.S. where the first wave is still accelerating, some states are reporting more cases among younger people who have been congregating at bars and concerts. And there's more criticism of the president tonight who joked the U.S. should slow testing to bring the numbers down. Jennifer Johnson reports.
A third migrant worker has died from COVID-19 in Ontario. Concerns for the health and safety of these seasonal workers prompted Mexico to ban its citizens from coming to work on Canadian farms. But Ottawa was able to strike a deal with Mexico that improved conditions and allowed its migrant workers to keep coming here. Abigail Bimman has more.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that China detained Canadian citizens Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor in an obvious attempt to put political pressure on Ottawa over the case of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou. China strongly disagrees and has issued Canada a warning. Chief Political Correspondent David Akin has more.
The family of an Ontario man who was shot dead by police is demanding the officer be fired and a public inquiry be launched. 62-year-old Ejaz Choudry was suffering from Schizophrenia and may have stopped taking his medication. His death has sparked protests. Sean O'Shea has more.
As more long-term care homes are declared virus free, they're taking in new residents to fill the beds left by those who have passed away from COVID-19. But filling up those empty beds is opening up new concerns. Ross Lord explains.
