This animation shows the principle of hydrophobic silane impregnation acting as passive corrosion inhibitor. With gradually reducing moisture content, the electrical resistivity of the concrete is increasing; therefore, the rate of corrosion activities on the embedded steel reinforcement will decrease.
This effect also applies to the reduction of unwanted reactions such as Delayed Ettringite Formation (DEF) or Alkali Silica Reaction (ASR) where one of the key factors triggering these reactions, is the presence of humidity.
