Benjamin Guggenheim, a wealthy American businessman, joined RMS Titanic on her maiden voyage on 10 April 1912, accompanied by his mistress, Leontine Aubart, and his valet, Victor Giglio.
On the night of 14 April, RMS Titanic struck an iceberg 375 nautical miles south of Newfoundland, Canada. Guggenheim and Giglio were asleep in their quarters only to be awoken by Aubart.
Leontine and her maid, Emma Sagasser, were reluctantly ushered into Lifeboat 9, as Guggenheim comforted them by saying "It's just a repair. Tomorrow the Titanic will go on again".
One survivor claimed that Guggenheim assisted in escorting women and children into lifeboats, and later returned to the boat deck in evening wear, with a rose at his button hole.
He was overheard by a survivor saying "We've dressed up in our best and are prepared to go down like gentlemen", and was last seen with Victor sipping brandy and smoking cigars.
Both men died aboard the ship on 15 April 1912, along with over 1,500 passengers and crew. Only 705 people survived the tragic maritime disaster.
