Life coaching is an unregulated industry in Canada that has grown during the pandemic.
Unlike doctors, psychologists, or psychiatrists, there is no academic qualification required to be a life coach. While there are hundreds of programs claiming to certify and train life coaches, even provide accreditation, life coaching is not a protected title.
During Marketplace’s hidden-camera investigation, we met one life coach who claimed it took her nine months to earn her life coach certification.
Host Asha Tomlinson was able to get certification from the same institute by paying a fee of about $250, bypassing the course material and completing a short quiz in about an hour.
When Marketplace contacted the institute, they said they do have safeguards in place, but they failed when we took the test. In response to Marketplace, the coach said her life experience and other training qualifies her to be a life coach.
