During the Second World War, there were thousands of SS guards and concentration camp staff who inflicted such suffering and pain onto prisoners. Many of them such as Irma Grese, or Josef Kramer had worked at different camps across the Third Reich, and following promotions they received senior jobs. One man who became the final commandant of Auschwitz I was Richard Baer, a man described by Himmler as brutal enough to carry out the killing operations there. Richard Baer had become a member of the SS in 1930, and he worked inside many different camps including Neuengamme and Dachau where he received his training.
But following the sacking of Arthur Liebehenschel, a man regarded as too soft for being a Commandant of Auschwitz, Baer was appointed to become the Commandant of Auschwitz I. He would follow in the footsteps of other horrific guards such as Rudolf Hoss, and he served in this position until Auschwitz was closed as the Soviet's advanced. Whilst there he was involved in administering brutal beatings, executions and also forcing prisoners to work very hard in terrible conditions. But he was then transferred to become the Commandant of Mittelbau-Dora, another camp which was used to make the V1 and V2 rocket. After the Allies liberated this, Baer was nowhere to be found and he lived for decades in Hamburg under a false identity, claiming he was a forester. But he was later arrested, but before he was placed on trial, he died from a heart attack. Today many of his crimes remain untold.
