Every year over 430 million people are at risk of infection in the Meningitis belt in Africa.
Médecins Sans Frontières is taking part in the roll-out of a revolutionary new vaccine against meningitis in the so-called meningitis belt in Africa. Until now the disease has regularly swept across the region claiming many lives during the meningitis season from January to June despite mass reactive vaccination campaigns.
The new vaccine has been specifically designed to protect against the form of the disease common in this region, Meningitis A, and importantly, can prevent people contracting the disease and passing it on. This could mean an end to the epidemics that devastate the local communities. MSF's Dr. Cathy Hewison and Marie-Noelle Rodrigue discuss the new vaccine and the benefits it will bring
