A large number of African vultures have been poisoned in southern Zimbabwe, prompting conservationists to warn that birds are now at greater threat than rhinos. 39 birds, most of them critically endangered white-backed vultures, were found decomposing after feeding on a cow carcass laced with a fast-acting poison. Initial reports suggest a farmer was trying to rid his land of hyenas or jackals, but poachers are notorious for killing the rare animals.
