Jeff Langevin, a recent graduate of the Psychology program at Trent University, describes his experience at Trent as "life-changing" and adds "it changed the way I think about the world." Mr. Langevin chose to pursue his degree at Trent after completing a Criminology Diploma at Fleming College and credits both educational institutions with providing him with a very solid practical, and education-based foundation to succeed in life.
Trent University is known for making transfer from college to university as simple as possible. Many Trent students who come from community college have great success stories to share.
Sense of belonging for everyone
Mr. Langevin's first experience on the Trent campus took place when he accompanied a friend to a lecture. He admits, "I was afraid that everyone would immediately notice that I didn't belong." It wasn't long after beginning his studies at Trent that Jeff discovered that "everybody belongs at Trent -- it doesn't matter if you are right out of high school, a mature student, a parent, or an international student - no matter what your background is, you're accepted here".
Building skills and self-confidence
Like many, Mr. Langevin had a life-long fear of public speaking. After having avoided it throughout college, he confided to his 'favourite professor', Dr. Geoff Navara, who provided him with the reassurance: "If you know your topic inside and out and speak with confidence, you will be fine." Professor Navara's advice helped for that presentation and has made a difference ever since to Mr. Langevin's confidence in making presentations and speaking publicly.
Mr. Langevin feels that entering university as a mature student and knowing enough to take advantage of the helpful resources offered by Trent - including academic skills and academic advising -- made his time at university a huge success. Despite never "seeing myself as a university student," and after not having done particularly well in either high school or college, Jeff is extremely proud of how he excelled at Trent.
"If I can do it, anybody can do it!" says Mr. Langevin. "Don't be scared. If you're interested in attending university, do it!"
