Simotua's rescue highlights the tragic reality of poaching. Spotted alone, with a terrible injury to his leg caused by a snare and a deep spear wound to his skull, this 15 month old elephant calf had clearly been without his mother for some time before we stepped in to rescue him on 23rd June 2015. Watch the dramatic rescue unfold and see him receive the intensive care he desperately needed at his new home: our SWT Nairobi orphanage.
** UPDATE: Very sadly, Simotua took a turn for the worse a few months later and, despite our very best efforts including multiple tests, treatments and diet change, he continued to lose condition and passed away on the 16th March 2016. His passing is particularly tragic given how far we had come. We do however take a vestige of comfort under such circumstances knowing that at least he died surrounded by the love of his human family, who were with him throughout. Rest in peace Simotua.

Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.
