MANILA – Former team national players Stephan Schrock and Misagh Bahadoran will be leading a pack that will embrace the "Azkals" name again. Under the moniker, they will be joining the Asia 7's Championships from October 9 to 12 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Earlier this year, the Philippine Football Federation decided to retire the nickname. But for Schrock and Bahadoran, the name itself has inspired Filipino football fans across the country, that's why it should not be "buried in the closet."
"Why keep the Azkals moniker in the closet and bury it there? It gave a lot of pride, it gave a lot of hope, it made a lot of lives happening for a lot of players over 15 years," Schrock said during a press conference on Wednesday in Makati City.
Bahadoran said he was inspired by the "Azkals" nickname and even left his profession for the sport.
"Why do we have to remove the name and start something? I stopped dentistry, I graduated dentistry and I started to play football and Azkals name inspired so many kids in the Philippines, so many people to play football," he said. "'Azkals' was the foundation of football name in the Philippines."
As part of their preparations, the Azkals are actively seeking additional players. Tryouts will be held on September 7 and 8.
