In Jane Austen’s novel, 'Pride and Prejudice', servants are only seen through the eyes of their masters and mistresses, but they played a vital role in the Regency household. They waited hand and foot, night and day, on the ladies and gentlemen of the house, cooking all their meals and doing all the housework.
This clip is from the BBC series Regency Life. Actress Charlotte Ritchie lifts the lid on a typical day for three Regency era people - a housemaid, her gentleman master and a young upper middle class woman.

Teaching History?
This clip could be used to create a 'Conduct Book' reflecting contemporary expectations and etiquette. Alternatively the class might perform a 'Blind Date' type game show with potential dates from the eighteenth century and today interacting. Students should use the exercise to seek out the contrasts in etiquette between Regency and modern times.
This clip will be relevant for teaching History. This topic appears in OCR, Edexcel, AQA, WJEC KS3/KS4/GCSE in England and Wales, and CCEA GCSE.
