How to Dead Head Rhododendron ‘Cunninghams White’, Dead Heading Rhododendron, Get Gardening
Very straight forward video to show how to dead head a Rhododendron. Nothing technical and no tools are required, just your thumb and forefinger.
Simply hold the base of the finished flower head stem in your thumb and forefinger and bend downwards until the stem snaps out. Job done.
If you want to undertake any pruning to re-shape or reduce growth then now is also the time to do it, using a pair of clean and sharp secateurs.
Simply cut just about an outward facing bid to remove the unwanted growth.
Roughly 2 weeks after dead heading and pruning I apply an ericaceous feed to the Rhododendron.
To ensure a good flower display next year make sure that you keep the plants on the moist side throughout the summer and autumn months. If plants dry out then they will put on more stem growth rather than forming flower buds.
