Wholesale deflation — or the rate of decrease in wholesale prices determined by the Wholesale Price Index — stood at 3.48 in May, as against 0.92 per cent the previous month, according to official data released on Wednesday.
The WPI had stood at a 34-month low of -0.92 per cent (deflation) in the previous month, when the prices fell for the first time in almost three years. A negative reading of WPI indicates deflation, suggesting easing wholesale rates compared with the corresponding period a year ago.
