Video features the 362 ft (110 m) long nuclear-powered Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarine USS Hartford (SSN 768) surfacing in the Beaufort Sea, Artic Ocean, in support of Ice Exercise 2018. The ice thickness was roughly 2 feet.
The Arctic has for decades been a strategically important region where U.S. submarines operate. The ongoing build-up of Russian capabilities in this area suggests it will remain so. Indeed (March 2021) 3 Russian subs surfaced within a radius of 300 meters of each other, making quite a statement.
