The Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) is a battery-powered four-wheeled rover used on the Moon in the last three missions of the American Apollo program (15, 16, and 17) during 1971 and 1972. Before the design was finalized, engineers envisioned an entire spectrum of possible configurations. Some of these ideas relied on the belief that NASA might use two Saturn V's in a single mission, to support the delivery of large payloads of equipment to the Moon. NASA also issued contracts for pressurized vehicle studies, which would permit lunar exploration missions lasting days or weeks far from any lunar base. The vehicle shown in the film, a Mobility Test Article concept for the Lunar Roving Vehicle, was conceived and built by Grumman for NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). Battery powered, the MTA used electric motors. However, the belief in the two Saturn V concept began to evaporate in the later 1960s, and as NASA's budget became constrained, the pressurized concepts were shelved in favor of the much lighter weight and shorter range moon buggy LRV.
