00:00 Introduction
Jim Beam Double Oak was reviewed using the Bespoke Unit Liquor Formula, a quantifiable review matrix that you can use online or quickly refer to if you're in a hurry. For the filled-out formula sheet of this straight bourbon, visit the review link above.
00:33 Overview
Jim Beam Double Oak is a premium expression from the trusted Jim Beam company with a slightly elevated presentation and a slightly different maturation process.
Double Oak refers to the maturation process of four years in charred, new white American Oak. After this initial step, the matured bourbon is transferred into new, charred white American Oak barrels yet again and aged further. This results in a Bourbon that is richer and with a bit more spice.
01:42 Presentation
When it comes to the Jim Bean Double Oak's bottle, you will recognize that, in contrast to the slender & taller white-label offering, the Double Oak is actually a short, robust, and rather fat bottle.
The colors include a sort of gold-copper melange with the writing and a beautiful, dark blue background on the label. On the label is also a ton of information regarding the quality and the legacy of the Jim Beam family and brand.
03:21 Robe, Appearance & Nose
In the glass, the Jim Bean Double Oak Bourbon is a golden brown, slight copper hue with plenty of viscosity. Its alcohol content is actually 43 (86 proof).
The nose has a very woody, charred, fresh white Oak sensation right upfront. Indeed, the promise from the label and marketing fluff has proved true. Additionally, there is a strong essence of vanilla caramel, but not in a typical plain upfront sweetness. Instead, it's a charred, darkly roasted, and almost dry ash that just elevates that vanilla cream, ultimately taking it to a new level.
In the nose, there is also significant depth and spice. As far as spice, I was able to detect pink peppercorns, clove, and nutmeg all mingled a mellow fruitiness. Towards the end, some marzipan notes arise along with a bit of burnt caramel.
04:58 Palate
Whereas with traditional bourbons you'd expect significant sweetness upfront, this Jim Bean Double Bourbon offers a dry sensation on the palate, almost like charred ash. The spice notes provide a bitter quality on the edges of the tongue. They coat the mouth with a mellow but rather woody spice and overall it's a rather balanced experience.
The alcohol is beautifully woven in. It feels smooth and creamy, with a distinctly elegant, dry woodiness. It truly shines both on the olfactory and also gustatory sensation.
06:00 Cocktail Pairings
After tasting this Jim Bean Double Oak Straight Bourbon, the message and the storytelling beautifully translate into the sensory experience. This makes this a superb Kentucky bourbon whiskey to sip straight or you could pour it over ice.
This Double Oak could also be a promising ingredient for an old-fashioned Manhattan. However, you should probably stay away from overly fancy drinks with juices and syrups. Instead, focus on clean, minimalistic, elegant serves where the spirit can really shine.
06:54 Food Pairings
A traditional, typical Austrian sweet made of coconut, coconut cream, and a little bit of bitter chocolate would pair well here as it is a wonderful combination due to the sweetness typically associated with American white Oak It would certainly counterbalance some of the dryness, astringency, and charred woodiness of the Double Oak.
07:34 Cigar Pairings
I paired this with a full spicy cigar with a dark wrapper, a Rocky Patellas Vintage 92, which is an old trusted everyday smoke that you should definitely have in your rotation as well. It brings a lot of elegance and a lot of creaminess to the table as well. So, not just a superbly spicy darkly roasted Maduro cigar, but really like the Double Oak in a subdued elegant and harmonious fashion overall.
08:11 Overall Value & Experience
This Double Oak Bourbon is a great value for money because of its ~20EUR/$ price. It's a great everyday whiskey that's definitely a notch above your standard pouring bourbon. But because of its versatility, it's a very affordable price point and the overall elegant presentation.
