This video brings together a number of questions from students and answers provided by me, Greg Sadler during the second session of the online 6-week Stoicism and the Cardinal Virtues taught in my Study With Sadler Academy in Spring 2024. That session was devoted to the cardinal virtue of wisdom or prudence.
The questions asked are:
1. Where does Epictetus talk about the “preconceptions” or “general conceptions”
2. Epictetus makes reference to “keeping your rational faculty about you”. Is that equivalent to the “ruling faculty” or the prohairesis?
3. Can we reconcile the Stoics being proto-feminists in terms of equality with also stressing the importance of fulfilling social roles?
4. In some ancient thinkers wisdom is in control of other virtues. Does that hold for the Stoics? Do they think virtues are in control of each other
5. Besides Diogenes Laertes and Arius Didymus, do we see a taxonomy of the subordinate virtues of wisdom elsewhere?
6. What is the relationship between the “liberal arts” and wisdom for the Stoics?
How does the good emotion wish (boulēsis) figure into friendship as a good thing?
7. It makes sense that the sage will pursue self-sufficiency, but also realize they want other people to refine their virtue with
8. Did the Stoics ever say anything about moral exemplars? I think that’s a more contemporary notion of virtue ethics
I plan to teach this class again, in an expanded 8-week format, in Spring of 2025, in the Study with Sadler academy. If you're interested in enrolling next time around, keep an eye out for announcements!
