The F92A was one of the most innovative yet disastrous F1 car ever built by Ferrari. Raced in 1992 season it was driven by Jean Alesi and Ivan Capelli, replaced by Nicola Larini for the last rounds of the championship.
It was designed by aeronautical engineer Jean-Claude Migeot, famous for the introduction of numerous aerodynamic concepts and solutions during the '80s and in the '90s. Trying to make the most of the air flows in the lower part of the car, Migeot studied a "double-flat bottom" floor for the F92A: the lateral sidepods, or badly said, the body of the car, was lifted up of about 15 centimeters from the flat floor, in order to create a second tunnel for air. (you can appreciate it at 0:39 or 4:40).
The results achieved in the wind tunnel were encouraging but when the car hit the track, immediately its problems and defects came out. The 92A lacked in top speed because the generated aerodynamic load was way too excessive and the shape of its sidepods acted as parachutes, plus the raised weights gave big drivability problems.
Enjoy the sound of the 3.5-litre V12 engine in action around Imola Circuit!
