The BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in the Biomedicine category has gone in this fourth edition to the Russian-born biochemist Alexander Varshavsky for discovering the mechanisms involved in protein degradation and their critical importance in biological systems. His work has implications for the understanding of cancer and immunological and neurodegenerative diseases.
