The third Birkbeck International Business Seminar hosted by the International Business Group in the Department of Management, Birkbeck, University of London and inspired by a charitable contribution from the Worshipful Company of World Traders. The mission of the seminar is to bring together scholars, industry, policy and third-sector practitioners to share cutting-edge research and ideas on salient international business topics.
The profound positive and negative impact of the increased integration and interdependence of the global economy on countries, companies, and individuals has made globalisation a double-edged sword. Although the net effects are undoubtedly positive, we cannot ignore the uneven distribution of the gains and the sometimes unethical and immoral behaviour of individuals and international companies associated with illicit trade practices and criminality of various forms. The seminar aims to raise awareness of The Dark Sides of International Business by identifying and analysing its broad aspects, assessing its scale and determining its pervasive impact on countries, companies, and individuals.
In this video John Burbidge King, past Master of the Worshipful Company of World Traders and a specialist in corporate reputation and risk management talks about some of the ways in which business and crime are linked.
