Starman was recorded in February 1972 as a late addition to the concept album "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars". It was released as a single to promote the album and became Bowie's second chart hit success since "Space Oddity" . The chorus is quite similar to Harold Arlen's "Over The Rainbow" from the film "The Wizard Of Oz" (the octave leap on the word "Starman" is identical to that on the word "Somewhere" in "Over The Rainbow"). Bowie said: "Starman is in fact some where over the Rainbow and I just went from there and just took it somewhere else to be..It became a blueprint for that...Anything I touch always kind of gets peverted out of all recognisable form. That's half the fun of it".
The bass was played by Trevor Bolder.
