Madrid, Spain is one of our favourite cities in Europe. We loved the culture, the food, the atmosphere, and the weather! We found people to be so friendly and welcoming, and often got into wonderful conversations with strangers… of which we could only partially understand. We stayed at a lovely apartment in the Lavapies area, and loved it. We walked everywhere, and were surrounded by amazing tapas restaurants, cafes, and bars.

Highlights:
Retiro park is probably one of the best parks we’ve ever been to. There are several museums in and around the park, and there is a lovely display of work in the Palacio de Cristal. The row boats on the man made lake in the centre of the park are a must do, it’s inexpensive, and a lot of fun! If you’re looking for a place to catch the sunset, you have to go to the Temple of Debod. The monument is an ancient Egyptian temple that was rebuilt in Madrid, and from it, the view of the sun setting over the Royal Palace is absolutely magical. If you’re in Madrid on a Sunday, you should check out El Rastro Market in Lavapies. It stretches several blocks, and there is a good assortment of vendors along the way. It gets pretty busy, but it’s worth if for the people watching alone. We absolutely recommend a visit to Madrid, and unlike many other European cities, your Euros will go far here, so go ahead and indulge on all the great food and drinks the city has to offer!
