Valsas
Radamés Gnattali (1906 - 1988)
Roberto Szidon, piano
Radamés Gnattali (1906 - 1988) joint together musical nuances of his hometown Rio de Janeiro with that of New Orleans in this first commercial recording of his piano works, performed by the great Brazilian pianist Roberto Szidon. Not only is this music a juxtaposition of two of the greatest cultures in 20th century, it is itself a synonym of extremities: sentimental yet profound, improvisatory yet sophisticated, raw and organic yet elegant and graceful.
Roberto Szidon has always been one of the chief advocates of Brazilian piano music, from Villa-Lobos to Mignone to Gnattali. Many of his recordings have since re-issued on CDs, except this.
What is most surprising here is that this repertoire is being released by Deutsche Grammophon and the typographical error on its cover (Gnattalli instead of Gnattali).
