Aircraft which fly more direct routes use less fuel: this is good for the environment as there are fewer emissions. It saves airlines money, too.
We at EUROCONTROL launched the Flight Efficiency Initiative (FEI) in 2013 so as to offer aircraft operators the most efficient routes on the day of operation. We scrutinize flight plans and find a quicker or more cost-effective route. The Network Manager can make re-routing proposals up to two hours before departure.
In 2014, thanks to the FEI, we were able to save 32,644 minutes and 375,000 kilometers.
