We welcome Shakespeare scholar James Shapiro, who discusses his new book “The Year of Lear: Shakespeare in 1606.” In that year, Shakespeare wrote three of the greatest tragedies of all time: “Macbeth,” “King Lear” and “Anthony & Cleopatra.” Shapiro details the circumstances in England that may have influenced the composition of these plays, as well as his take on the personality of the elusive 16th Century playwright.

Next up, our guest is film critic and TV commentator, Jeffrey Lyons. He shares anecdotes from the files of his father, the legendary columnist, Leonard Lyons, which Jeffrey has collected into his new book “What a Time it Was!: Leonard Lyons and The Golden Age of New York Nightlife.” Born into poverty on the Lower East Side, Leonard Lyons covered the nightlife beat in NYC for over 40 years and was considered one of the most influential journalists of the era, forging friendships with many of the best-known personalities of the period including Ernest Hemingway, Salvador Dalí, Jimmy Durante, the great Eleanor Roosevelt and the scurrilous Duke of Windsor.
