Final Fantasy Tactics was a tactical RPG developed by Squaresoft, released in Japan in 1997 and 1998 in the United States. Written and directed by Yasumi Matsuno, the medieval fantasy war simulation game was a seminal influence on Naoki Yoshida (producer/director Final Fantasy 14, producer of Final Fantasy 16), as well as the developers of Creative Business Unit 3 for it mature depictions of religion, chivalry, class power - topics that were unheard of for a video game at the time.
Unlike other FF games at that time, Final Fantasy Tactics' battles took place on an isometric battlefield, which took its influence from Ogre Battle and Tactics Ogre, two games Matsuno had worked on during his tenure at Quest games, which he later brought over to Squaresoft. He also co-developed the game's Charge Time Battle system with Hiroyuki Ito, who had also developed the Final Fantasy turn-based and ATB combat systems.
