If you're up for a decent walk in Port Melbourne but don't want to turn left towards St. Kilda beach, there is always the 2.7 km walk to Sandridge Lookout down the Bay Trail. It's quite a popular trail for those living in Port Melbourne to go for a run, have a decent swim or go fishing. The Bay Trail itself is a very nice walk or bicycle ride🚲. The Maritime Cove Park also has plenty of spots to picnic with a kids playground, barbeque stoves and a running trail, all opening up to a long beach.
If you're into industrial stuff, the walk takes us closer and closer to the cranes at the docks, which is used to load and unload cargo onto container ships🚢 - we take you up all the way to the fence where you can see this in action.
You might notice the wind howling 🌬 when we're near Sandridge Lookout. I suspect this is caused by the way the wind hits the structure, as it doesn't happen anywhere else.
It's a relatively safe walk and I've been here in the evenings too. There are usually people here fishing even on dark winter evenings (often huddled around a big bonfire). The wind is relentless here, so bring a wind blocker and be prepared to be splashed with salt water if you choose to walk past Sandridge Lookout to the container port.
