World Swim by Martin Strel (swimming around the world) is a movement to help the planet. The project movement will connect people, businesses, governments, celebrities and top athletes around the world who are aware of their responsibilities to our planet!
World river and sea swimmer Martin Strel and businessman and marathon swimmer Gašpar Gašpar Mišič are trying to raise public awareness of environmental pollution with microplastics by swimming from Piran to Savudrija and back on International Coastal Cleanup Day. The event is also part of Strel's World Swim project, the purpose of which is to swim around the world.
Ultramarathoner and five-time Guinness record holder Martin Strel and marathon swimmer Gašpar Gašpar Mišič have prepared a campaign with the message "Microplastics - tiny particles, big problem" in cooperation with the Municipality of Piran, the Public waste management company Okolje, the Diving Club of Croatian disabled war veterans Nemo-Adriatic and also with Plava promocija, an agency from Zagreb.
Last year, Strel, the then director of the Okolje Piran Gašpar Mišič and the director of the Rižanski vodovod, Martin Pregelj, swam 13 kilometers from Piran to Koper. This year, Strel and Gašpar Mišič set out on the 10-kilometer route Piran-Savudrija-Piran.
They swam in the company of three vessels. On one, water filter innovator Hakim El Khiar from Koper used an underwater drone to measure the microplastic content at various depths in the Gulf of Piran. They plan to send the data to institutes and universities.
El Khiar warned that 40 percent of microplastics are microfibers that have already entered the food chain. As he explained, every machine wash releases millions of microplastic particles. According to him, some companies are already working on the production of microfiber filters that are installed on the drain of the washing machine and in 2025 every washing machine will have to be equipped with such a filter.
