V/line employs four Y class diesel locomotives for shunting passenger cars. Two are based at Southern Cross, one at Geelong and one spare. Here we see Y156 (entered service 1968) shunting at Geelong during the evening peak on Friday 24th of January 2020. Mainline loco N462 has just arrived into Platform 3 with four-car N set FN13. The N class was uncoupled from the train, and Y156 along with a flat wagon coupled to the up end of the train. The Y then hauled the cars out of the platform (to be stabled in the yard alongside the station), and N462 follows the train under yard conditions as far as the signal at the end of the platform, where it awaits permission to proceed to the locomotive depot. I'm not 100% sure what the purpose of the flat car is, but have heard it is used as a spacer wagon when shunting cars through the train wash. I'm not quite sure why it was being used here, unless these cars were destined straight for the wash.
