In this video we discuss the equality and inequality math symbols. We go through each of the 6 symbols and show examples explaining each of the symbols.
Transcript/notes
There are 6 major symbols that are used throughout mathematics, less than, less than or equal to, greater than, greater than or equal to, equals and does not equal.
The less than symbol has its open side facing to the right, and its pointy side to the left. For instance, 5 is less than 9, or a is less than b, when you are dealing with unknowns. Using a and b, if b turned out to be 7, a could be any value less than 7. On a number line, this is drawn like this, with a right parenthesis on the number 7 and an arrow going to the left on toward negative infinity.
And parenthesis mean the number is not included, and brackets mean the number is included.
The less than or equal to symbol is almost the same as the less than symbol, except that it has a line under it. An example of this is c is less than or equal to d, so, if d turned out to be 12, c could be 12 or any value less than 12. On a number line, this is drawn like this, bracket on the number 12 and an arrow going to the left on toward negative infinity.
The greater than symbol has its opening side facing to the left and its pointy side facing to the right. For instance, 9 is greater than 5, or b is greater than a, when you are dealing with unknowns. Using a and b, if b turned out to be 11, a could be any value greater than 11. On a number line, this is drawn like this, with a left parenthesis on the number 11.
The greater than or equal to symbol is almost the same as the greater than symbol, except that it has a line under it. An example of this is c is greater than or equal to d, so, if d turned out to be 4, c could be 4 or any value greater than 4. On a number line, this is drawn like this, bracket on the number 4 and an arrow going to the right on toward negative infinity.
The equals symbol means that 2 values are equal. So, if we had t equals r, and we found that r equals 14, then t also equals 14.
This equals sign with a slash through it means does not equal. So, if we had x does not equal y, and we found that y equals 6, then x could be any value except 6.
