Russia Vetoes UNSC Resolution Calling For Ceasefire in Sudan | Firstpost Africa
The ongoing civil war in Sudan was at the centre of a heated debate at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Monday. The 15-member council voted to adopt a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the war-torn nation. 14 out of 15 members of the UNSC voted in favour of the resolution calling for a ceasefire except for Russia. Russia, which is a permanent UNSC member vetoed the draft resolution prepared by the United Kingdom and Sierra Leone. Russia's veto triggered a war of words at the Security Council. Russian envoy justified the veto by describing the resolution as having "post-colonial flavoring". Britain, on the other hand, called Russia an enemy of peace. Watch the video for more.
