Strafe jumping is accomplished by a complex keypress combination and can greatly accelerate your character in Quake 3 or Rage. Here's how I do it:
1. You can start off sprinting or not, personal preference, obviously it gets you up to speed a lot faster in Rage.
2. Start moving forward and jump, just press and release the jump key. As soon as you start jumping, hold the strafe key in one direction and look slightly in that direction with your mouse.
3. At the height of your jump, begin holding the jump key.
4. Just before you hit the ground, release the jump key. The timing here is critical and this is what will break most strafe jumps.
I try to change strafe directions with every jump, as this can give you more control. This is why you see my view sweeping left and right. You can accelerate more quickly sometimes by holding a single strafe key the entire time. Both types of jumps are shown in the video.
